CONTEXT

Bringing clarity to patients

Patients at Mount Sinai used to wait weeks for their test results, causing stress and delays in their care plans. Our project gives patients easy-to-understand visuals of their results on the same day as testing, helping them and their doctors have better conversations about their health right away.

CHALLENGE

Pinpointing issues

We spoke with the clinicians in the center and found that:

  • Long Wait TimesPatients undergoing assessments faced 1-3 week waiting periods for test results
  • Usability - Clinicians needed a solution that anyone could be quickly trained on without extensive training
  • Reduced Engagement - The extended waiting period led to uncertainty in their healthcare journey.
  • Workflow Enhancement Potential - Automating data processing could save valuable clinical time.

How can we...

  1. Streamline data entry and visualization for clinicians?
  2. Provide patients with clear, immediate health insights?
  3. Enhance clinician-patient communication through engaging visuals?

SOLUTION

Creating a visualization tool

We developed an application that puts intuitive interactions first while keeping data presentation clear and simple. Our solution delivers same-day visualizations of Tier 1 assessment data, showing patients key metrics alongside easy-to-understand explanations and healthy ranges. This adaptable design streamlines manual data entry for clinicians while giving patients immediate insights into results from assessments.

Through constant iteration based on regular testing and feedback sessions, we created a consistent experience that fits into existing clinical workflows despite challenges like limited device APIs. Patients are able to leave with a better understanding of their health status and the chance to have meaningful conversations with their healthcare providers, using the visualizations as a guide.

SOLUTION

Design and development lead

As lead designer and developer, I spearheaded the entire process from research to implementation. I conducted interviews with Mount Sinai clinicians to understand their workflows and pain points, while analyzing patient research to inform my visualization approach. I designed an intuitive interface through iterative wireframes and prototypes, then built both the front-end visualization components and back-end data processing systems. Regular testing with users ensured the final product effectively addressed the needs of both patients and clinicians within existing hospital workflows.

Final notes

We successfully designed and deployed a web application that significantly reduced result turnaround times for patient data, enhancing patient engagement by providing clear, accessible insights into their health status. Through ongoing user feedback and data analysis, we continuously refined the interface and added essential features to improve the experience.

Clinicians experienced more efficient workflows with reduced manual data handling, allowing them to focus more on patient care. Despite technical constraints, the project accomplished its primary objectives of improving patient satisfaction and accelerating data delivery.

  • Embrace Iterative Design — Regular feedback cycles proved essential for refining the user experience. Our continuous testing with actual users allowed us to make targeted improvements that directly addressed real needs.
  • Document Design Alternatives — A more comprehensive record of design explorations and alternatives would have strengthened our process, even for options we didn't ultimately pursue.
  • Prioritize Human Connection — Creating tools that facilitate better communication between patients and clinicians was crucial to our success. The most impactful aspects of our solution were those that enhanced understanding and conversation.
